Reflection Letter in English -- Tragedy in Sandy Hook
A REFLECTION AMIDST THE TRAGEDY IN THE COMMUNITY OF SANDY HOOK
Metropolitan Stefan Soroka
Our hearts and minds are filled with emotions surrounding the tragic events at the Sandy Hook Elementary School where twenty children and six staff lost their lives. We, like that community, are in shock at how such an awful thing could occur. It is heartwarming to see many turn to prayer in their desire to seek comfort for those who were painfully struck by loss. The media have consistently shown how many people have turned to God in prayer, and have gathered in their various Churches in the community to offer mutual support.
We will shortly proclaim that God is with us at Christmas! God is with us through the immense care and concern being shown to the many people who are hurting. God is with us through the heartfelt prayers offered for the families. God is with us through the testimony of admiration and appreciation being shown for the teachers and staff who showed such bravery in a very difficult time. God is with us through the many professional people who have been involved throughout the time of dealing with the tragedy, and who will continue to journey with the families and with the community. God is with us in the sharing of grief and anguish on a national scale.
God is with us through the inspiring example given to us by people such as the school principal who lost her life. She offered daily reminders to the children of her school to express kindness to others. This speaks loudly of who she was. Her words of advice are a living testimony of her and a call for our understanding and goodness to be celebrated with others daily. Reporters shared how many people spoke of going home and giving extra special hugs to their children and to their loved ones upon hearing of the tragedy. They spoke of their intentions to express their love for their children and for others who serve with dedication in the schools and in the community. So many signs of “hug a teacher today”.
God is with us, my brothers and sisters in Christ. God is speaking to us through the vivid expression of feelings, the heartfelt expression of gratitude, and the wisdom of advising everyone to cherish every minute of life with loved ones and with others God grants us to journey with throughout life. The best testimony you and I can give to the lives so tragically lost is to live fully, expressing kindness, gratitude, and love. It conquers evil. It overcomes anger. It helps to prevent more such sadness in life. God helps us to deal with such tragedies and to do our part in helping to prevent other such tragedies. God is with us to listen to our grief. He enables us to offer mutual support and love. He encourages us to choose to live more fully with others He gives us to love and to care for in life.
The media reports shared how the people of Sandy Hook are committed to not let the tragedy take away from their celebration of Jesus’ birth. It has become an even more special invitation to be with Jesus and to be with others whom they love, to celebrate Christmas together. They are showing us how to turn a tragedy into an opportunity to listen to the whispers of God to them, to you and to me. They are choosing to listen and to realize God’s presence. God is with us! Let us join with them in holy prayer. Let us also choose to celebrate at the banquet of life – the abundant life in Jesus Christ in our celebration of Christmas.
Choose to live life fully in celebrating Christmas in your holy Church. Choose to express your appreciation for the gift of life, the gift of love shared by God with you and with me in Jesus, and the gift of life and love shared with our loved ones. A Blessed Christmas!

For all those called home to the Lord from the senseless act of violence against the children and teachers in Connecticut, may they be granted rest in the bosom of Abraham and numbered among the saints and may their grieving loved ones be comforted by Your divine grace, we pray You, hear us and have mercy.
Lord, have mercy! (3 x)
We also pray for Your healing compassion and seek Your understanding, as we mourn the victims, weep with their parents and families and pray for all those whose lives have been shattered by this act of evil, we pray You, here us and have mercy.
Lord, have mercy! (3 x)
We also pray for an end to the violence and senseless killings that have ravaged our nation, that all of us, as a people may be inspired to respect all human life, and that You may bless our nation and our troubled hearts with Your peace, we pray You, here us and have mercy.
Lord, have mercy! (3 x)

Rev. Ihor Royik is the pastor of the church and is also a member of the staff of "The Way."
In the parish bulletin Rev. Ihor Royik wrote, "My Dear Parishioners and Guests, I am delighted to extend my warmest greetings to every one of you on this occasion of the Golden Jubilee of our Church and at the same time I invite you to celebrate together. This is not only a historic event, but it is also a time to pay tribute to all of our pioneers who, throughout 50 years, set new paths for us to follow. Let us give thanks to our Almighty God for all pioneers who helped build this Church and everyone who helped to maintain it. They gave future generations the very generous gift of their faith, their values, and their traditions. Let us value this! May this generous gift remain a shining example for us to follow and may it be a source of inspiration so that we may have the courage to set new paths for future generations..."

Basilian Sisters from Ukraine visiting our Archeparchy
OSBM Sisters Visit
Basilian Sisters from Holy Trinity Province in Ukraine will be visiting a number of parishes within our Archeparchy in the coming months to solicit financial support for their ministry in Yavoriv (in the Lviv region of western Ukraine). They are desperately in need of providing a suitable monastery for Sisters who are involved in catechetical ministry, youth work, educating orphans and children, visiting the sick, and providing retreats for faithful. Interestingly, Basilian Sisters who originally came to minister in the USA were from this monastery. Let us help them in their time of need so as to enable their valued and needed ministry. Their need is essential for their well- being and enabling their ministry to spread to neighboring cities and villages beyond the boundaries of Yavoriv.
The Sisters will be visiting St. Nicholas Church in Passaic on Nov. 4th; Annunciation of Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Melrose Park on November 11th; St. Michael the Archangel Church in Frackville on Nov. 11th; National Shrine of the Holy Family in Washington, DC on November 25th;and St. John the Baptist Church in Newark on December 23rd. Presentations by the Sisters will be made generally following the Liturgies, and will include a short video. I ask all of our pastors to look kindly and generously on the needs of these Basilian Sisters and encourage the financial generosity of the parishioners. I encourage the parishes to consider giving a donation from the parish funds as a thoughtful observance of the upcoming St. Philip’s Fast.
The Basilian Sisters have provided more information to the parishes via a separate mailing. Please inform your parishioners of their need and invite their generosity in charity. Thank you. God bless in ways only He can those who respond generously to needs of others. The heartfelt thanks and prayers are offered by Metropolitan Stefan for all who share from their abundance.

Kazka Celebrates 25 Years of Song and Dance
Kazka Ukrainian Folk Ensemble
Celebrate 25 Years of Song and Dance
Celebrate 25 Years of Song and Dance
Twenty five years ago, four young friends with a love of all things Ukrainian banded together to form the Kazka Ukrainian Folk Ensemble. Incorporated in Schuylkill County in 1987 Kazka (which means folktale in Ukrainian) is dedicated to the preservation and performance of the songs and folk dances brought to the anthracite coal regions by the Ukrainian immigrants in the late 19th and early 20th century. The founding members include the vocal quartet of Joseph Zucofski, Michael Duda, Sandra Minarchik Duda and Paula Duda Holoviak. Kazka’s vocal and instrumental repertoire encompasses traditional folk songs and modern Ukrainian composers as well as folk carols and liturgical selections. Kazka has produced three recordings including Kazka, Timeless Traditions and God Sees All featuring Ukrainian Christmas music.
The ensemble also currently has over twenty young dancers who perform choreography from the Hutsul, Transcarpathian, Lemko, Boyko, and Poltava regions of Ukraine. Numerous talented individuals have contributed choreography to the group including Mykola Bojczuk and Helena Kozak (Philadelphia), Ken Rylance (Canda), and David Woznak (Cleveland) The ensemble’s current choreography is Andrij Dobriansky of New York City. Metropolitan-Archbishop Stefan Soroka celebrated his 30th Anniversary to the Priesthood at a reception at the Sisters of the Order of St. Basil the Great
In Celebration of a Dedicated Life to the Church
On June 20, 2012, the Sisters of the Order of Saint Basil the Great (Fox Chase Manor, PA) hosted a reception honoring His Grace, Most Reverend Stefan Soroka on his 30th anniversary as a priest. After a communal opening prayer, Provincial Superior Sister Dorothy Ann Busowski welcomed the Archbishop with a brief speech. Drawing from the words of the apostle Matthew on the theme of calling, she encapsulated the Archbishop's life and deeds in the realm of the Lord’s work.
Drawing from Scripture, Sister Dorothy Ann opened her remarks with an allusion to the Archbishop’s entry into the religious life. “Thirty years ago,” she observed, “Jesus whispered to you, ‛Come follow me, and I will make you a fisher of people.’” (Mt 4:19). She then noted that by accepting Christ's invitation, the young priest had begun a life of giving and that over the course of three decades, many “have been beneficiaries of the gifts you have received.”
Sister continued by extolling Archbishop Soroka's achievements as a priest, enumerating his spiritual successes in the context of the Living Water that is the overarching symbol of those who choose the path of the Fisherman. "Your warm gift of welcome is like a lighthouse whose beams invite all into the warmth of its confines. You cast a net far and wide capturing those that the Lord has given to you, never throwing back what you catch. And you have a way of calming the stormy waters . . . making each struggle seem surmountable. . . . "
Sr Dorothy Ann presented Metropolitan Soroka with a Fishing net and said, "You cast a net far and wide capturing those that the Lord has given to you, never throwing back what you catch." |
The Provincial Superior closed by expressing her community's delight in sharing this special occasion with His Grace, recalling his personal interest in the well-being of the community and each of its members, his cooperation and goodness, his support of and participation in the Sisters' pilgrimages, jubilees, and the recent celebration marking the centennial of their work in the United States. "In all instances," she concluded, "you affirm us and show a confidence in what we are presently doing and indicate a hope in our future endeavors." ----------------------------------------

Plast Scouts Perform
Spring Cleaning Good Deed in Sloatsburg,
NY
By Christian Patti
On June 8, 2012, the Plast group Sokoly (Falcons), part of the 31st kurin (unit) honoring Ivan Vyhovsky from Passaic, NJ, helped with
spring cleaning at the grounds of the Sister Servants of Mary Immaculate in
Sloatsburg, NY. The five scouts, pictured below, moved and arranged
85 picnic tables and their benches, as well as 9 park benches, for the sisters.
The Sister Servants of Mary Immaculate rely on volunteer support from the Ukrainian Catholic community. These scouts responded to the request of Sister Kathleen Hutsko, SSMI, Provincial Superior, to help in preparation for the yearly pilgrimage, this year on August 11 and 12, 2012. Sister Kathleen said, “There is so much preparation needed to be done and we can’t do it without volunteers. We’re grateful to the Plast youth for coming to assist us.”

Encounter 2012 (Ukrainian Text)
“Together in Christ – the Spirituality of
Discipleship: A Call to Holiness” (Спільність в Христі – духовність
Who
is the Church?” Другу сесію: “Activity of the Royal
for Church Growth” (Проект
and What of Lay Leadership: Action – Put on Christ!”
Leadership: Be All That You Can Be!”
корпус, є регіоном Конференції Католицьких Єпископів США. Вони належать до таких Традицій: Вірменської;

TOGETHER IN CHRIST – ENCOUNTER 2012
The Eastern Catholic Bishops of
the USA
are sponsoring three Encounters of our respective Churches this year which will
take place in three locations: Cleveland,
OH (September 20-23), Los Angeles, CA
(November 1-4) and for the Eastern United States
at St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church in Hillsborough, NJ (October 11-14).
These gatherings and the one in Hillsborough in particular, are geared for the
laity and clergy with the theme:
TOGETHER IN CHRIST – THE SPIRITUALITY OF
DISCIPLESHIP: A CALL TO HOLINESS
An Encounter is a time for all
Eastern Catholics to meet and to grow in the Lord, and to study themes that
would assist them in fostering more spiritual and educational growth in their
parishes. By having an Encounter in our region, it will be easier and
convenient for more participation of the laity and clergy. Also, follow up
meetings and programs within a certain region will provide more growth for our
Churches since parishes of Eastern Traditions have so much in common.
A special day for clergy who have
pastoral commitments in parishes will precede the weekend. The weekend
Encounter (Friday evening through Sunday brunch) is mainly geared for the laity
who are asked to arrive on Friday for a welcome and hospitality. The main focus
will be on Saturday and Sunday. Four plenary sessions will be held.
The first session, entitled Who
is the Church? will be led by Rt. Rev. Damon Geiger of the Eparchy of
Newton. The second session, Activity of the Royal Priesthood,
will be led by Dr. Maureen Dadonna of the Eparchy of Passaic. The third
session, Blueprint for Church Growth, will be led by Sr. Marla Marie
Lucas, MSCL, of the Eparchy of St. Maron. The main session entitled, The
‘How” and ‘What” of Lay Leadership: Action – Put on Christ! will be
presented by the Most Reverend Peter Libasci, Bishop
of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Manchester, New Hampshire.
On
Sunday, Matins and the Divine Liturgy will be celebrated followed by the keynote
address entitled, Servant Leadership: Be All That You Can Be! presented by the
Most Reverend Nicholas Samra, Eparch of the Melkite Eparchy of Newton.
Registration is $75.00 per person
for the Encounter. A discount for early registration of five or more from one
parish is available at $50.00 per person. Hospitality and meals are included in
the registration fee. Vendors of Eastern Catholic books and icons are being
invited to complement the Encounter.
Previously, Encounters were held
in 1999 in Boston and 2006 in Chicago. They were held mainly for bishops
and invited clergy and laity. This year’s Encounter is open to all who want to
learn, pray and grow in Christ for the building up of the Body of Christ.
The Eastern Catholic Bishops have
formed a national body are a region in the US Catholic Conference of Bishops.
They represent the following traditions: Armenian, Byzantine – Melkite,
Romanian, Ruthenian and Ukrainian; Syriac – Chaldean, Maronite, Syro-Malabar,
and Syro-Malankara.
