Lviv, Ukraine, 25 March 2011: Most Reverend Sviatoslav Shevchuk has been elected Major Archbishop at an Electoral Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Lviv/Bruhovitchi 21-24 March 2011, in accord with the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches and the Particular Law of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC).

His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI confirmed and blessed the election of Bishop Sviatoslav according to the decision of the Electoral Synod of Bishops of the UGCC on 23 March 2011.

On the fourth day of the Electoral Synod of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church bishops made ​​a choice, unoffical source informed RISU. However, there is no official confirmation of elections from the Vatican yet, and name of new head of UGCC is not disclosed. Now bishops are waiting for a response from the Apostolic See.

Liturgy in preparation for the Electoral Synod

On March 20, 2011 at St. George’s Cathedral in Lviv a Hierarchal Divine Liturgy was celebrated in preparation for the Electoral Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, which will elect a new Father and Head of the UGCC. The day of prayer and spiritual reflection began with a Divine Liturgy, the purpose of which was to try to get to know God’s will concerning a new UGCC Spiritual Leader.

Participating in the Divine Liturgy, headed by UGCC Administrator Most Rev. Igor (Voznyak), were all the bishops of the UGCC from Ukraine and abroad. They will collectively take part in the Electoral Synod. Rev.Dr. Borys Gudziak, the rector of the Ukrainian Catholic University, delivered a sermon to the assembly. Shroud Replica Exhibit in Washington, DC

Exhibit in Washington, DC

The Ukrainian Catholic National Shrine of the Holy Family, Washington, DC, will host an exhibition of an authentic replica of The Shroud of Turin. This is the 9th replica of the Turin Shroud sanctioned by the Vatican.

Metropolitan-Archbishop Stefan Soroka, of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia, has been able to procure this relic for exhibition beginning Sunday, March 6, 2011 through April 14, 2011 at the Ukrainian Catholic National Shrine of the Holy Family at 4250 Harewood Road, Washington DC.

The official beginning of the Exhibit will be celebrated at the Divine Liturgy on Sunday, March 6, 2011 at the Shrine at 10:30AM with Metropolitan-Archbishop Stefan Soroka as the main celebrant.

Schedule of Divine Services:
Sunday: Divine Liturgies 9:00 a.m. English 11:30 a.m. Ukrainian
Friday: Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts 7:00 p.m. Ukrainian and English
Saturday: Divine Liturgy 12:15 p.m. Ukrainian and English
